Shadow of the Samurai is a Main Quest in Ghost of Tsushima (GoT). Main Quests in Ghost of Tsushima (GoT) are categorized as "Jin's Journey", these are highlighted in Gold and focuses on the main campaign of the game. Completing main quests reward Jin with various items such as reputation points, tools, resources, charms, and story progression. Please see Quests for other walkthroughs on other tasks.

I finally have the tools and allies I need to rescue my uncle from Castle Kaneda. Before we strike out, I should speak with Yuna at the town of Komatsu Forge, and see if she’s planning to join my fight. I’m coming for you, Lord Shimura.

Infiltrate Castle Kaneda

• To start, open your Journal in the menu and track the tale to mark the location of the first objective.
• You'll need to travel to Komatsu Forge and speak to Yuna to trigger a begin the last quest for the first act.
• After the cutscene, you'll automatically be at the rendezvous point along with Sensei Ishikawa, Masako, and Yuna who is waiting for Ryuzo.
• If you're in a hurry, you can speak to Yuna to progress the quest, but it would be nice if you talk to your other allies first and listen to what they have to say - speak to Yuna when you're ready

Scale the cliffs to infiltrate Castle Kaneda.

• Of course, heading inside through the front is suicidal, so you'll need to scale the cliffs to reach the castle. Luckily, you already have the Iron Hook to climb.
• Once you're able to sneak in, you'll need to find the Mongol alarm first and to avoid being caught or raising the alarm.
• Immediately crouch when you squeeze through the gap and hide through the grass.
• The Ronin Attire is the best choice of armor here while infiltrating the castle undetected.
• Simply follow the marker to reach the location of the alarm. Also, along the way, there will be enemies that you'll need to assassinate, just be stealthy as you can.
• When you reach the location where the alarm is, you'll need to kill the guards patrolling the area before proceeding to the next objective.

Advance to the upper courtyard

• Next, proceed to the upper courtyard along with Masako and clear the area of Mongol guards.
• There's a large number of guards here, so stealth is the recommended way to lessen their numbers or hopefully, killing them all without engaging them head-on.
• Once you've cleared the upper courtyard, search the are for resources first, then speak to Masako.
• Jin then instructs her to operate the Hwacha while he continues to move forward.
• The next task is to rendezvous with Yuna at the bridge who's hiding behind some barrels.

Defeat the Mongols guarding the bridge

• The bridge and the gates ahead, of course, are heavily guarded. So as always, stealth is the best approach here.
• Assassinate the Mongols who are alone, and if one of its allies discovers the body, prioritize in killing them first before taking out the next guard.
• Just like in the upper courtyard, you need to clear the area and kill all the guards.
• Once you've killed them all, continue forward and head to the main bridge of the castle.
• The gate across the main bridge is locked, so you'll need to find another way in. Look to the right side near the gate and you'll see climbing holds that you can jump onto. You'll have to make your way to the bottom and work your way under the bridge.
• The path is pretty much linear and you'll be able to find your way around the cliff and to the castle grounds.
• Once you're in, you'll need to open the bridge gate for Yuna.
• Same as before, once Yuna is with you, you will have to defeat all the Mongol guards in the area.

Advance to the main courtyard

• After defeating all the Mongols, search the courtyard first for resources before advancing to the castle's main courtyard.
• One of the enemies here is a Mongol Leader, save him for last and kill him to obtain a point used to unlock a new stance.
• Next, head up the ramp that leads to the main courtyard and you'll find that it's locked. Look to your left and you'll see a gap that you can squeeze through - from here, you'll go in alone and a cutscene will trigger.

Defeat Ryuzo

• Surprise! It's Ryuzo! it looks like he's turned against Jin and wishes to kill him in order to claim a generous amount of bounty to whoever kills Jin.
• It seems Ryuzo has no other choice and will do whatever he can to save his men.
• As soon as the cutscene ends, you'll have to duel against Ryuzo.
• One of Ryuzo's unblockable attacks can be parried if you've unlocked the Unyielding Sword Parry technique that is found under Samurai Techniques. If you haven't unlocked the technique, your only option is to dodge his attack.
• Ryuzo is an agile warrior. So it's best to defeat him with counterattacks after a successful parry or dodge.
• Also, maintain your distance since he can deliver a flurry of attacks or kick Jin to stagger him.
• Once you've depleted all of his health, another cutscene will trigger. Jin tries to reach out to Ryuzo but instead, alerts the rest of the Mongols.
• You won't have any other choice here but to fight the Mongol soldiers head-on. Make sure to kill the archers first, you can easily kill them with one shot to the head.
• Kill the Mongol soldiers and enter the keep to save Lord Shimura.

Rescue Lord Shimura

• Along the way leading to the keep of the castle, you'll encounter more Mongol guards. You need to kill all the enemies before entering the keep.
• Once you're inside there will be more Mongol guards. You can immediately challenge one of the Mongols to a standoff - successfully winning a standoff will recover Jin's Resolve.
• Kill the remaining soldiers and head to the second floor.
• At the top, you'll see a sliding door. Approach it and you can assassinate the guard who's standing on the other side of the door. If you haven't you'll now unlock the Shoji Assassination move which will allow you to kill guards standing behind a Shoji.
• Climb up the next ladder to reach the top floor and you'll encounter more Mongol guards.
• Follow the marker and you'll hear Lord Shimura. All you have to do is to kill the remaining guards and a cutscene will trigger.

Defeat the Mongols

• Now, you'll need to escape the castle and fight through the Mongol forces along with Lord Shimura.
• Defeat the first group and another cutscene will trigger where Jin and Shimura rendezvous with the rest of the team.
• A large group of Mongols will then attack and you'll need to defeat them all along with the rest of your allies. Although you'll have companions here, they can still be knocked down and you'll need to revive them if they are fallen. Falling to rescue them within their time limit will result in their death, as well as failing the mission.
• Once you've cleared the last group, another cutscene will trigger and you'll complete and close the first act.
• Players will also be able to obtain the trophy "Family Reunion".
